Wow, what a dick move on ASU's part. Maybe if ASU was extremely prestigious or on par with big Ivy League schools I could understand. But...it's ASU, one of the biggest party schools in the nation that will accept literally anybody.
In fairness, on the one hand, the university partially recanted its decision and established a scholarship endowment fund in his name. On the other hand, the students do a really poor job of hiding their discontent and distaste of Obama under the guise of honoring Crow's decision. Strangely enough, no one involved in the decision making process could explain why is it that growing up poor and biracial, making it to Harvard, editing its law review, being a constitutional scholar, and then becoming the first Black president is somehow "your body of work isn't good enough." Yet, celebs and rock stars get HDs. I'm still waiting for sense to be made, and I'm afraid I'll be waiting for a long time.
Until then, A-S-Who?
I'm not sure why Obama would want an honorary degree from there, nor why they should give one. He means nothing special to the school, and the school means nothing to him, and the degree means nothing to his resume.
However, the interviews of frat party attendees on the issue is ridiculous - don't they have a 90% dropout rate anyhow? most of those people won't have a degree from there themselves.
It's just a formality. I don't think ASU will make or break that man's professional vita. It was just a bit of a slap in the face, especially when representatives at ASU went on the record to talk about why Obama didn't deserve it, and especially comparing the "bodies of work" from people who got the honorary prior.
